Dar/Kigoma/Lake Tanganyika/Sumbawanga/Mbeya/Lake Malawi/Dar

Day 1:

Departure by plane from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma.

 Transfer on own to the port, to collect the tickets and leave the luggage.
Time free to look around Kigoma and to buy some provisions for the boat trip.
Check-in at the port early afternoon, when the M.V. Liemba departs for Kasanga.
Accommodation only on double cabin, the Captain’s Cabin (the only private toilet on the boat) might also be booked with a supplement. 
Meals and drinks are available at the restaurant

 

Day 2:

On board M.V. Liemba, which is the only way of communication for all the villages along the lake;
 on each stop boats of all kinds race to the ship to load passengers and cargo.

 

Day 3:

The ship should arrive in Kasanga, the last Tanzanian port, at 3 am. and sometimes waits to disembark until sunrise a 6 am.

A vehicle will be waiting for the clients at the port to transfer them to Mbeya. This is a long drive of about 10 hours.
Breakfast, lunch and drinks are being taken along the road.
 On arrival at Mbeya, check in at Utengule Country Hotel. Dinner and overnight

 

Day 4:
Morning at leisure to visit the coffee plantation.
Early lunch and transfer to the station to board the Tazara train to Dar es Salaam. Accommodation only in private 1st. class sleeper compartment.  Late afternoon the train crosses the Selous Game Reserve with chances of game viewing along the way.
Meals and drinks are available at the restaurant coach but not included. 

 Day 5:
 The train continues to cross the country, with an expected arrival in Dar es Salaam in the afternoon.
 Meet at the train station and transfer to a Dar town hotel, airport or port.

Extension to Lake Malawi

Day 5:
Depart for Lake Nyasa (Malawi) with sightseeing of the Rift Valley along the way.
Arrival at Matema Beach and accommodation at the Swiss Cottages (belonging to one of the missions in the lake)
 where full board will be provided. Time at leisure to swim at the lake, possibility of hiring a canoe to visit a nearby village or to do some snorkelling.  

Day 6: Morning at leisure, after lunch return to Mbeya. Dinner and overnight at Utengule Country Hotel

Day 7:
Morning at leisure, lunch and transfer to the station to board the Tazara train to Dar es Salaam.
Accommodation only in private 1st. class sleeper  compartment. 
Late afternoon the train crosses the Selous Game Reserve, with a chance of game viewing along the way.
Meals are available at the restaurant coach but not included.
Morning at leisure and transfer to the train station for the departure to Dar es Salaam.

Day 8:
The train continues to cross the country, with an expected arrival in Dar es Salaam in the afternoon.
Meet at the train station and transfer to a Dar town hotel, airport or port.
