Zanzibar Beach Idylls
Sun-bleached sands, jade waters and palm trees burnished gold by the tropical palettes of eternal sunshine make the Zanzibari coastline a Paradise regained.

And as is fitting for an archipelago nourished and founded by its splendid maritime isolation, so the fruits of the Indian Ocean continue to bewitch and nourish today's maritime adventurers.
Development is afoot, however, and whereas ten years ago, there were only a handful of guest houses on the whole island, the Government has embraced mass tourism, bringing large resorts and charter planes along with it. We recommend the following selection for those in search of a break of integrity.

Bluebay Beach Resort

A large, four-star hotel on what is possibly the best stretch of beach on the island. Efficiently-run, well-sited with excellent gardens and professional facilities, including a good dive shop and a spa due to be finished in 2004. Ideal for families and clients that like their modern comforts.
Ras Nungwi

The hotel is situated on a lovely white sand beach at the very north of the island and has proved to be a reliable and constantly-upgraded hotel. An excellent restaurant with the biggest wine selection in Tanzania make this the closest to a boutique property on ZNZ. The double rooms are in cottages overlooking the sea with all the conveniences. This hotel has the largest variety of dive sites on the island and one of the best dive shops from which to operate them.
Matemwe Bungalows

A small, intimate, hotel with only 12 bungalows, all self-contained, and three suites. All are built with local materials in a local style with an impressive eye for detail and a worthy attempt at both ecological and community-based tourism development. Superb quality food, including fresh catches of the day, is offered. Recommended for those with a dislike of large hotels.
